On the occasion of the release of the console version of the retro JRPG title 8-Bit Adventures 2, we had a virtual coffee and cake chat with the developer from Critical Games, Joshua Hallaran.
For all the readers of our portal who haven't played it, and without revealing too many details, can you briefly tell us about the game's story?
When an abused child with impossible powers threatens to reshape the world, the disappearance of heroes sparks a great adventure - and a fight for survival!
What tasks and goals do players face during gameplay?
Thanks to the powers received from the "all-knowing computer," players travel the world battling deadly enemies in turn-based combat with the goal of overcoming a tragic villain. And, perhaps it is also possible to save him...
Why do you think there is so much love and passion for modern retro games?
Retro-style games provide an experience that players cannot get anywhere else. Focused gameplay, unique storytelling, and a charming aesthetic that leaves room for players' imagination.
Why did you decide to release 8-Bit Adventures 2 on consoles?
After the successful release on PC, I wanted to meet the fans' demands for a console port. After all, consoles are the home of the JRPG genre and the ideal place to experience the epic story of 8-Bit Adventures 2.
What are you most proud of in 8-Bit Adventures 2, and will we see a third installment one day?
I am proud of the charming characters we created and their ability to connect with players. I have bold plans for the third game and hope to also make a remake of the first game in the series.
Which legendary JRPGs have inspired you the most?
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IX and X, and MOTHER 3 were our biggest sources of inspiration - which can be felt in our story and combat mechanics. However, we applied lessons from the entire JRPG genre.
What message did you want to send to the players?
I wanted to send an optimistic message in the style of Hironobu Sakaguchi's work on the Final Fantasy series, to make players feel good while playing and provide them with a sense of hope for the future, despite difficulties or tragedy. I think we all need that.
