SCUM is an open-world survival game developed by the Croatian studio Gamepires in collaboration with Croteam and published by Devolver Digital. The game is available on the Steam platform, having been in Early Access since 2018, but today you can play the full 1.0 version of the game. After just a few hours of gameplay, it is clear that SCUM is not a game for everyone, but for those seeking a challenge, detail, and realism – this game could be a perfect fit.
The game's storyline is set on a fictional island (inspired by the Croatian island of Brač) that serves as a prison complex run by the corporation TEC-1. Players take on the role of prisoners participating in a brutal reality show for mass viewing. The goal is to survive in harsh conditions, fight against other players and hostile NPCs (including zombified wanderers called "puppets"), explore the island, and – if possible – escape.
What immediately stands out about SCUM is the level of realism and complexity. The game goes far beyond the standard hunger and thirst system. There is a whole metabolism system that tracks calorie intake, vitamins, minerals, hydration, body temperature, and much more. Every bite and sip of water affects the character. Even bodily functions, such as urination and defecation, must be performed manually. All of this may seem excessive, but it actually contributes to a deep sense of immersion in the game world.
Movement through the environment is also very realistic. The character has limited physical abilities that develop throughout the game – running, jumping, and fighting consume stamina and can lead to injuries if overdone. Combat can be tense and deadly, especially against other players. Weapons, ammunition, and gear are not easily available, making each find precious. The crafting system is detailed, with a strong emphasis on improvisation and survival in nature.
Graphically, SCUM makes a strong impression. The island is diverse, with dense vegetation, abandoned military bases, rural settlements, and hidden locations. Weather conditions and the day-night cycle further enhance the atmosphere. The sounds of nature and the environment are well integrated, and every rustle in the forest can signify a potential threat.
In conclusion, the first impressions of SCUM are extremely positive for those who enjoy complex and realistic survival games. Although it is not tailored for casual players due to its complexity, it offers a unique experience that has little competition in the market. If you love games that push you to plan, adapt, and be resourceful – SCUM is a title that is definitely worth trying.
key differences between SCUM 1.0 and earlier versions:
- SCUM 1.0 finally removes random “puppets” and introduces an encounter system – enemies only appear when you attract them or when you enter certain zones, making for more exciting and optimized gameplay.
- The game has introduced armed NPCs with intelligent, adaptive behavior, making the world feel more alive and dangerous.
- A deep and diverse quest system has been created: players can complete predefined missions or design their own tasks.
- The entire map has been redesigned: POI locations have been refreshed, new buildings added, and an advanced loot system implemented, reshaping the game.
- The anti-cheat system has been replaced with Easy Anti-Cheat on BattlEye, for better protection and fair play.
- The return of vehicles such as tractors, hydroplanes, and new vehicles has enhanced mobility, exploration, and bases.
- A new tutorial has been introduced, and with the wipe, all players start fresh for an exciting and fair beginning.
- Visually and technically, the engine has been thoroughly optimized – better graphics, fewer bugs, and more stable frame rates and performance.
