In a world full of indie RPGs, Drova: Forsaken Kin stands out as a unique title. Developed by Just2D, this game combines a deep narrative experience with a harsh, unforgiving world where decisions carry weight, and survival is never guaranteed. Whether it's the dark visual storytelling or the challenging combat system, Drova offers players an experience that sets it apart from the competition.

Divided World

At the heart of Drova lies a world divided between two conflicting factions! This is not a simple story of good versus evil; instead, players find themselves in a world of moral ambiguity, where it is not overly clear where some character conversations will lead and what unexpected consequences will arise from the quests we choose to pursue in our adventure. Right at the beginning of the game, you have the opportunity to get acquainted with the game's decision-making mechanics. At the start of the game, you receive a crystal that needs to be delivered to the druids of Nemeton. On your way, you come across a settlement of outcasts from Nemeton who present you with a dilemma: will you talk to the druids in the settlement, or will you continue towards Nemeton and the druids as recommended by the heroine who entrusted you with the crystal? The decision is entirely yours and will shape the course of your story, highlighting the complex moral nuances that define this world. Drova definitely gives players the opportunity to shape their path and the ending of the story in a phenomenally subtle way.

This narrative structure gives players the option to choose sides - or to remain neutral - depending on their own values. Both factions offer different ideologies and goals, making your decision leave a strong impression as you navigate through a world shaped by centuries of conflict and hidden secrets.

The Art of Storytelling

Just2D places a strong emphasis on storytelling that respects the intelligence of the players. The mythology of the story gradually unfolds, and mysteries are revealed through notes, conversations, and subtle environmental elements, rather than through overly obvious explanations. This approach to storytelling should certainly draw you deeper into the world’s environment, encouraging exploration and rewarding those who take the time to explore every corner of this ravaged world.

Discrete narrative choices and unique interactions with characters contribute to the distinctive experience of Drova. Each character has their own motives and complexity, ensuring that your interaction with the characters in the game is not just a task-reward system. There is real depth here - a sense that this is a living world where your decisions can impact the social and political landscape of the game. Additionally, a certain evolution of the story comes to the fore, so at one moment you might realize that you don't like your faction and may lean towards another.

Visual aesthetics: pixel art in a new light

At first glance, Drova seems like just another in a series of games with pixel art graphics that dominate the indie RPG market. However, the developers have made an effort and created an excellent pixel art environment that is rich in atmosphere and dark beauty. The colors are muted, and the visual aesthetics of the game rely on shadows, decay, and desolation - perfectly reflecting the thematic core of the game. It also somewhat resembles Gothic.

The world is depicted as harsh, with landscapes filled with the remnants of past battles, abandoned villages, and eerie forests that seem to stretch endlessly. This environment is created not for the comfort of the player, but to evoke a sense of unease and danger - one that lures you forward while simultaneously warning you of impending threats. Perfect for rainy autumn gaming nights.

Combat: no room for mistakes!

The combat in Drova is ruthless, and that is precisely what makes it exceptional. Unlike many action RPGs, here it is not possible to randomly mash buttons and expect to win. The combat system rewards patience, strategy, and understanding of the enemy. Players must carefully manage their stamina - which is consumed for attacks and dodging - forcing them to think carefully before engaging in battle.

Fights are tough, and each encounter carries a sense of importance. Whether you are battling a random bandit or a deadly beast, you must be prepared, properly equipped, and mentally ready for combat. Death is not just a temporary failure, but a reminder of the importance of every move you make.

Weapons and spells are diverse, giving players the flexibility to choose their preferred playstyle, but each choice comes with its compromises. Every move, every swing or spell has its purpose, and each battle presents a challenge with a steep learning curve that rewards persistence.

Crafting and survival

In Drova, combat is not the only challenge - crafting and resource management systems are equally important for your survival. You will need to gather materials to craft weapons, prepare potions, and upgrade equipment. This crafting cycle encourages exploration and ensures that every journey has an additional purpose beyond fighting enemies. It is important to mention that the crafting system is relatively well-developed.

Resource scarcity increases tension during travels. If you run out of supplies, you become vulnerable, while careful planning and crafting can mean the difference between life and death. The balance between risk and reward creates a satisfying tension that permeates the game's open world. In any case, I believe you will find yourself in many situations where some might say that the system adds excessive complexity to the game. But like most quality indie games - this one maintains a certain level of complexity below which it believes the mechanics would not make sense (which is a major advantage of indie games).

The game does not have an “up/down scaling” system, so in that regard, it is quite old-school, and I particularly appreciate that. It can simply happen that you walk through some part of the map, which typically has monsters you are “prepared for,” and suddenly stumble upon a character that completely crushes you because you entered his dwelling area. The developers themselves recommend that we stick to the paths given to us if we want to have a less frustrating experience - but for those who love to explore, it definitely increases the challenge and makes it a riskier endeavor.

Choices, decisions, and consequences

Perhaps the most important aspect of this intriguing retro CRPG is the emphasis on player choices and their often brutal consequences. Unlike many RPGs that offer choices without real consequences, Drova strives to make your actions resonate throughout the entire game world. The decisions you make can have unpredictable effects on future events, relationships, and even the balance of power between warring factions.

In certain situations, you may choose to collaborate with a faction for an immediate reward, only to later discover that their values do not align with your long-term goals. Conversely, you can remain independent, working for your own benefit without getting entangled in politics. These decisions define not only your gaming experience but also the way the world reacts to you. The story that emerges from your choices makes Drova a personal experience, creating a unique experience for each player. The world around you reacts and changes based on your actions, leaving the impression of a real impact on events.

Atmosphere and Sound

The atmosphere during gameplay is further enhanced by an excellent soundtrack. The sounds of nature, rustling leaves, howling wind, and creaking old wooden structures create a unique auditory backdrop. These ambient sounds are occasionally accompanied by a subtle, eerie musical score that arises at key moments, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. The musical elements further enhance the emotional impact of the game. The music appears exactly when needed, creating an atmosphere that heightens tension or brings moments of brief respite.
