The Japanese company Nintendo surprised players with the announcement of a special edition of its popular game Animal Crossing: New Horizons intended for the newer console Nintendo Switch 2 — the “Switch 2 Edition” will arrive on January 15, 2026.

What's new?

In addition to the standard edition for the original Nintendo Switch, players will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition for €4.99, while the Switch 2 version itself is priced at €64.99.
Among the announced novelties are:

  • Mouse Mode – support for moving and editing the island using a mouse.
  • Megaphone item – allows you to call out the names of your island residents.
  • Improved visual display and frame rate.
  • GameChat and camera functions that enhance online interaction.

Free update for everyone

An upgrade to version 3.0 for both the original and Switch 2 versions has also been confirmed – and it will be free.

The new updates include:

  • A resort hotel managed by the character Kapp’n and his family, which players can decorate as they wish.
  • Expanded home storage — from 5,000 to as many as 9,000 items.
  • The return of the character Mr. Resetti in the role of cleaning/decorating the island.
  • “Slumber Island” – a new option for multiplayer with friends.
  • Collaborations with retro Nintendo franchises, LEGO brand, Splatoon, and The Legend of Zelda series.

What does this mean for players?

If you are already playing Animal Crossing on the original Switch, the €4.99 upgrade will give you essential access to the new version – and if you buy the Switch 2, you can get the complete Switch 2 Edition version. All the advantages of the new hardware and improvements become available.
For new players, this is a great opportunity to jump straight into a more modern version.
