It sounds like a clickbait headline that pops up on Facebook or Instagram, promises spiritual enlightenment and ends up selling you books of dubious theological value.
But ozbiljno... already neko vrijeme se pitam: How? Why? And where has the game like the original gone Black & White?
No, the game isn't gone - it's still there. But the concept of such a game is completely extinct. At a time when we are flooded with remakes and remasters, titles that are released on almost every imaginable platform - even on smart refrigerators - Black & White seems to me like a game that deserves a new life. And I believe that it would be a real hit today.
The game that gave power - literally
Black & White, Lionhead Studios' first title, became an instant hit when it was released in 2001. Peter Molyneux struck again on Wednesday. The studio would later become better known for the Fable series for Xbox and PC, but this title remains unique.
You are literally playing the role of god here – yes, you read that right. The game combines elements of artificial life simulation and RTS, but what makes it special is the way moral choices shape the world around you.
It all starts simply: after the opening scene, you choose whether to save the boy from the sea - or leave him to the sharks. Good or evil. Even then the game sets the tone: "Be what you will - you are a destiny."
Your being, your reflection
The basic mechanism of the game is the relationship between you and your chosen creature - cow, monkey or tiger. These creatures do not come powerful and perfect. You need to feed them, train them, teach them, play with them, reprimand them when they make mistakes. Their behavior becomes a reflection of your attitude towards them - and in actual gameplay. Genius.
As you progress, you begin to attract the attention of other gods and their creatures, resulting in epic battles. Honestly, the fights were a bit clumsy and chaotic, with no real controls – more like watching a fan fight while the camera flutters around you.
God over the mouse
You could play the game only with the mouse - left click to move, right click to interact, and both together to control the camera. Simple, but intuitive.
The core of the gameplay involves collecting resources: food, wood, religion and - peasants. Yes, literally – faith in God and peasant harmony. The first map seems like a simple tutorial, but when you move on to the second, the feeling of power disappears - a stronger god stomps on you like an amoeba, your village burns down, everything starts over. Only on the third map does the real game begin.
Expansions and sequel
A year later, the expansion came out, but it didn't bring anything revolutionary - a few new creatures like rhinos and chickens.
- we also got a sequel - Black & White 2 - which further deepened the mechanics, but did not cause the same wave of enthusiasm as the original.
The Forgotten Divine Game
Black & White was a unique project. Concept, mechanics, interactions - everything was connected. Your behavior affected the behavior of believers, and their faith determined your power. It was a system where morality carried weight. I gave up the first time. The second time I came back. The third time I understood - something like this rarely happens again.
I hope someone recognizes the potential of this forgotten game and breathes new life into it. Because the new generations deserve this kind of experience. And us, older gamers? We don't age. We level up. 😉
