Chaotic Games, a studio based in Lyon, is currently intensively developing a first-person shooter called Seth. We had the opportunity to try the PreAlpha version and to some extent glimpse the game. I have to admit that I missed single player shooters, so this title intrigued me quite a bit. At first glance, its design and colors reminded me of Quake 3 Arena with a "breath" of Bioshock and Turok duo and even Doom. Turok definitely had a creative variety of weapons, and something tells me that the later phase of Seth won't be galloping for this concept, which I certainly welcome. Namely, the game and the story are a combination of mythological and science fiction, so it is to be expected that we will have the opportunity to shoot all kinds of demonic enemies with various means of destruction.

Speaking of the story, not much is known about it so far, except that you are in the role of the Egyptian Seth who is tasked with fighting Apophis. For those unfamiliar with Egyptian mythology, Seth is an ancient god who originally represented the deity of the desert. His great-grandfather is Ra, the god of the Sun, and Seth has a head that sometimes resembles a jackal, anteater, hyena, pig, okapi, giraffe, etc. In appearance, he is similar to his nephew Anubis. Together with his great-grandfather, Ra sails through the sky in the Sunship and fights against Apophis, an evil demon who attacks the ship every night and tries to destroy Ra as he travels through the underworld. Apophis is the opposite of Ra. He is chaos, darkness and opposes everything Ra represents. Of course, this short version of the story is the reason for the development of conflict and action in the game, and Seth (the character you play with) in the fight with Apophis combines his supernatural powers with SF weapons and face-to-face combat, and the result of all this is the improvement of further skills needed for more demanding enemies.

So the game has elements of character upgrades for combat. Sometimes you are in a situation where you can choose which portal you will go through, and it will give you an indication of which upgrade you can get if you manage to defeat all the enemies there. In general, skills are divided into several categories: health and stamina, improving firearms in terms of doing more damage or reloading faster, granting new or upgrading existing supernatural powers, or developing skills for physical combat with bare hands. I almost forgot to mention that you also have a shield that serves as a form of body armor. You can improve it too. How you optimize Seth for your playstyle is up to you. Stop the demons before they reach the underworld.

Alpha testing is over for now, and a new playtest will be announced on Steam so that players can once again give the developers feedback about further optimization of the gameplay, etc.
