The main character, Klaus Lee, is equipped with a jetpack and explosives with which he breaks obstacles, with the possibility of slow-motion gameplay for more precise jumps and detonations. Additionally, the game includes a powerful level editor that allows players to create their own challenges and share them with others. Combined with dynamic physics and numerous obstacles, such gameplay provides a challenging experience to the standard platformer format.
The graphics are a colorful pixel-art fantasy – diverse backgrounds and characters are painted in intense 8-bit tones and neon hues that evoke the visual atmosphere of the eighties. Different levels vary from dark underground caves to ancient temple ruins, all detailed with a retro aesthetic and rich colors. The sound is in harmony with the ambience: the soundtrack is full of synthesizer melodies and drum rhythms typical of the action 80s, enhancing the sense of tension and adventure. The technical performance on the PlayStation 4 console seems solid - the game is optimized for the platform and no bugs were noticed during gameplay.
The overall impression is that Klaus Lee – Thunderballs communicates very clearly who it is intended for. The title will mostly attract lovers of classic 2D platformers and fans of the retro atmosphere from the 80s, especially players who like challenging levels and creativity using the editor. Objectively speaking, it's a solid indie project - it doesn't bring much innovation, but it provides rich content and a nostalgic experience for the target audience.
