Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster is a remastered edition of two action RPG titles developed by Spanish independent studio Anima Project and published by Badland Publishing. This collection brings together the original game Anima: Gate of Memories from 2016 and its sequel Anima: Gate of Memories – The Nameless Chronicles from 2018, now technically and visually enhanced for modern consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The remaster version brings refreshed graphics, improved stability, shorter loading times, more fluid combat and more balanced gameplay that tries to modernize two iconic indie games.

The story of the collection is set in a world imbued with magic, secrets and philosophical questions about the soul, memory and identity. In the first part, the player controls a girl known as The Bearer and her inseparable ally, a powerful entity called Ergo, who is imprisoned in a mystical book. The two find themselves trapped in the huge structure of the Tower of Arcane, a labyrinth that hides memory fragments, long-forgotten entities, and the truth about the origin of the world. Bearer and Ergo try to save reality from destruction while facing their own pasts and moral doubts. The story is told through memories, dialogues and numerous encounters with beings that symbolize the sins and virtues of humanity.

The second part, The Nameless Chronicles, expands the universe from a different perspective. The player assumes the role of Nameless, an immortal warrior who was a supporting character in the first game. His story explores themes of redemption and eternal punishment, and the narrative unfolds parallel to the events of the first part. Through his search for meaning and memories, new aspects of the world and connection to Bearer and Ergon are revealed. This dual narrative structure makes the remaster particularly interesting because it gives players the opportunity to experience both sides of the same mythology.

Game mechanics are based on a third-person action RPG. Combat takes place in real time and combines physical blows, magical abilities and dodging. In the first part, it is possible to instantly switch between Bearer and Ergo, which creates a dynamic rhythm of combat and allows you to create different combinations of attacks. Each character has their own skill tree, which unlocks new abilities and passive bonuses, while experience is collected through battles and exploration.

The remaster version further improved the responsiveness of the controls and the fluidity of the combat system. The camera is more stable, the animations are smoother, and the light and particle effects are much more detailed. Locations within the Tower of Arcana now look richer, with sharper contrasts and deeper shadows, bringing out the mystical atmosphere of the world. The game also includes platformer sequences, puzzle solving and exploration of non-linear areas, where the player can choose the order in which parts of the tower are revealed. In the second part, The Nameless Chronicles, the focus is more on action and moral choices, with the possibility of multiple endings depending on the decisions made during the story.

Special emphasis is placed on aesthetics and music. The visual style of the game combines gothic and anime aesthetics, with elegant yet dark tones. The soundtrack, composed by Daniel Espinosa, strongly contributes to the atmosphere from anxious melodies in dark corridors to orchestral themes in epic battles.

The strength of the remaster edition is most evident in its ambition: although it comes from an independent studio with limited resources, the game manages to offer a world rich in mythology and an original visual identity. The combination of two games in one package provides a long-lasting experience and a more complete picture of the Anima universe. However, certain weaknesses of the original are still somewhat present. The camera, although improved, can be clunky at times, and parts of the dialogue still feel dated. But for fans of indie action RPGs, these are shortcomings that can be forgiven due to the charm and passion with which the project was developed.

Remaster edition on PlayStation 5 brings 49 trophies: 34 bronze, 12 silver, 2 gold and 1 platinum trophy. Trophies are split between both parts of the game, and reward exploration, combat, and story completion.

Final impression of Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster can be summed up like this: it's a collection that lovingly brings back two games that had a strong fan base, giving them new technical freshness and availability on modern platforms. These games aren't perfect, but they offer an honest and original vision of a fantasy world that departs from generic action RPGs. Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster manages to combine two stories, two protagonists and two views of the same world into one rounded, modern experience. Remastered technical aspects, rich story and symbolic aesthetics make it an attractive choice for those who appreciate indie titles with soul, while new players will finally be able to experience this saga as it was originally intended, as a whole.
