Mind Over Magnet: a magnetic escape through logic

Mind Over Magnet: a magnetic escape through logic

Mind Over Magnet is a 2D puzzle adventure by Mark Brown, better known as the author of the Game Maker's Toolkit YouTube channel. If you've watched his analysis of game design, this is exactly what you'd expect from him as a designer: smart, clean, and uncomplicated.

In the game, you take control of a small robot on a unicycle called Uni, who, with the help of a group of helpful magnetic friends, tries to escape from a mysterious factory, level by level. There are over 50 of them, each with its own puzzle and one task: to find a way out. But this is not a classic platformer. No excessive jumping or enemies. The game consists of only 4 characters, pure logic and experimentation.

Factory of logic

Each level is basically one room and one solution. Verbatim. No research, no idling. The goal is to use the abilities of our little magnetic helpers to attract or repel objects, activate doors or create a path to the exit, and the rooms are structured so that their name often alludes to the solution.

Magnus blocks the killer red beams so we can pass safely

Interestingly, each magnet has its own personality and unique function. The first we meet is Magnus, a classic among magnets, who simply attracts. Later we meet the twin sisters, Min and Max, who manipulate the directions of attraction and repulsion.

Weight curve and pace

The first ten rooms function as a cleverly arranged tutorial. Mechanics are introduced one at a time and then combined into increasingly complex forms. After that, every new room still asks you to stop, think, make mistakes - and learn. But the game never disappoints, the reset is instant, so every mistake acts as a step forward, not back.

Each level will greet you with a short, intuitive title

The pace of the game is ideal for short sessions: two to three rooms before bed, one break at work. If you want to feel that "aha!" moment every few minutes, you are in the right place. On the other hand, if you are experienced in puzzle games, some puzzles will still be too simple for you, and the end comes quickly: in 3 to 4 hours you have already beaten the game. However, because it doesn't require reflexes or super precise controls, this is a great title to play with younger puzzle-loving kids.

Audiovisual presentation: Modest, but clear

The visual identity is minimalistic: clean lines, clear shapes and clear contrasts that clearly highlight what is interactive. Everything looks like it was made with functionality as a priority. The music is light and unobtrusive, serving more as a rhythmic background than as a carrier of the atmosphere.

I played the game on Switch 2 and everything works as it should. Single-screen rooms are perfect for handheld gaming, and all elements remain legible even on a smaller screen.

A small puzzler with strong magnetism

Mind Over Magnet doesn't try to impress with explosions, it doesn't push the narrative, it doesn't splash around with mechanics. Instead, he chooses focus: one idea per room, pure logic and that's it.

Some may miss something "bigger", something more ambitious, but for me this format, without distractions, came as a good, short mental refresher. There is no crowd. Just you, a magnet and a few clicks.
