Utopia Must Fall is an indie arcade shooter with base defense and roguelike elements. The player's task is to defend the last human metropolis from endless waves of aliens using a laser cannon and various upgrades. The core mechanics are easy to learn – the main cannon automatically fires while the player controls aiming and occasionally launches a nuclear bomb in critical moments. After each survived wave, you choose a new upgrade for the city, which opens up various strategies: from strengthening shields and placing autonomous turrets to upgrading multi-barrel cannons or additional nukes for a more aggressive approach. There is no permanent meta-progression between sessions, so after a defeat, you always start over – a classic arcade approach that emphasizes skill.
The visual style stands out with minimalist vector graphics in neon colors, evoking the spirit of classic arcade games in a modern guise. The atmosphere is infused with dark humor and doesn't take itself too seriously despite the apocalyptic theme. Although the game is still in Early Access, it already offers plenty of content and challenges, and it has over 95% positive ratings on Steam. Utopia Must Fall is demanding, fast-paced, and extremely addictive – a treat for nostalgics and genre lovers, although it won't win over those who don't enjoy "old-school" arcade action. Considering the low price, the game provides a surprisingly rich experience.
