Good old worms...
Re-release of our popular game from 1999. A strategic turn-based video game developed and published by Team17. The game was originally released on Microsoft Windows and later ported to Playstation, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and even Game Boy Color.
This version of the game, i.e., the re-release, was released in August 2024. Thus, the "worms" are available on Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S and X, as well as Nintendo Switch.
Unlike the original version, this anniversary edition is packed with various treats. Here we have various emulators for Worms games, the original Worms for NES and Sega Mega Drive, and even Worms World Party for Game Boy Advance!
One special addition is a digital museum that shows us the chronological development of Worms from its beginnings to today.
Worms were truly a must-have and must-play game, as evidenced by the fact that it was included in the TOP 20 Nintendo Games of all time by Digital Spy, while in 2014, GamesRadar+ ranked it in the Top 50 Playstation games of all time, at 13th place, and the following year in the Top 100 at 68th place.
The versions for Playstation and Dreamcast also won the award for Best Strategy Game at the EGM Game Blast Awards.
Gameplay
Classic gameplay as we are all well accustomed to, especially those who still play older versions on PC, where we take on the role of the Worms, i.e., the whole team scattered across the battlefield, fighting with a spectacular arsenal of weapons on beautiful cartoon-style maps. The goal was to be the last surviving team, i.e., the winner.
Weapons include classics that we know well, such as bazookas, grenades, baseball bats, and uzis, as well as hilarious special weapons like the Holy Hand Grenade, exploding sheep, and the last one being the concrete donkey.
It has always been interesting to play and name your team of worms after your friends, give them funny accents, and enhance the game to the utmost limits.
We all agree that Worms Armageddon was one of the best and most popular installments of this "wormy" series.
A classic and already cult game that we have the opportunity to play and enjoy again, of course in 2D to feel as much nostalgia as possible. The Anniversary edition is exactly what we would expect from a re-release, although a lot could have been improved, such as crossplay and multiplayer lobbies.
From my personal experience, I played the game on Xbox Series X, and I had no issues with stuttering or any bugs. My only complaint is that the controls could have been improved, actually made easier, because moving and aiming with the same analog stick didn't make much sense to me. The biggest thing missing is zoom in the levels, but maybe that will be fixed later with some update, because the game in 4K, besides looking beautiful, is somewhat difficult without zoom.
There isn't any special tutorial that might help with navigating the game and using the crosshair and weapons, primarily now I mean for players who will be playing this game for the first time.
The game is great for casual players and for new players who are just coming into contact with Worms.
