The Defiant is a narrative-driven first-person shooter set in the Asian battlefield of World War II, placing players in the middle of China's War of Resistance against Japan—a vast and brutal conflict that claimed the lives of countless Chinese soldiers and civilians, and which has remained largely unexplored in video games until now.
The Defiant aims to reshape the way the FPS genre approaches history, offering a perspective rarely seen in interactive entertainment.
At its core, The Defiant offers a cinematic narrative experience. The game takes place through occupied villages, frozen forests, established supply routes and enemy-controlled urban zones, where each environment is shaped by the realities of guerrilla warfare and survival behind enemy lines.
The struggle reflects the very nature of conflict. Missions alternate fluidly between covert infiltration, close-quarters firefights, sniper missions, urban espionage, code-breaking, vehicular combat, and sudden large-scale attacks. There are no clearly defined fronts here — just tension, unpredictability, and moments where careful strategy can be just as effective as combat.
Built in Unreal Engine 5 by an experienced team of filmmakers and developers, The Defiant adopts a restrained yet authentic approach to human-centered storytelling. The goal of the study is not only to show the struggle, but to convey the emotional weight of the resistance and people fighting for survival, identity and homeland.
In The Defiant, weapons are treated as historical artifacts, not just tools. Players will use a wide range of firearms rooted in China's modern warfare history, including the Hanyang Type 88, Mauser C96, Bergmann machine gun, and more. Each weapon has been recreated with attention to its origin and role, carrying with it the memory of the era it represents.
