Following the success of Nioh (2017) and Nioh 2 (2020), the third installment brings an entirely new story that takes place after the events of the previous games. While Nioh 2 served as a prequel, Nioh 3 continues the main narrative line and puts the player in the role of Tokugawa Takechiyu, heir to a powerful dynasty, whose mission is to become Shogun and save Japan from the threat of yokai creatures.
Unlike previous games, Nioh 3 brings a whole new perspective. Players will take on the role of Tokugawa Takechiyu, the grandson of the famous Tokugawa Ieyasu, who faces the threat of yokai creatures and the fate of Japan. The plot spans different historical eras – from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period – and combines historical events with rich Japanese mythology.
The main threat in the game is The Crucible, a disaster that threatens to destroy the world, and Takechiyu must find a way to become Shogun and save Japan from supernatural doom.
Gameplay evolution
Nioh 3 retains the distinctive hardcore action RPG style with an emphasis on precise combat mechanics, but it also brings a number of novelties:
- Samurai and Ninja styles: Players can fluidly switch between two combat approaches, which opens up new tactical possibilities.
- Open fields: Unlike the linear missions in the previous installments, Nioh 3 brings wider areas to explore.
- Guardian Spirits and Yokai forms: The return of key mechanics that allow for transformation and the use of supernatural powers.
- Multiplayer: In addition to the cooperative mode, the game also offers competitive clan battles.
